15 Halloween Party Games to Keep the Celebration Going

Halloween Party Games Ideas

The best adult Halloween party games are icebreakers like Deadly Wink and Who Am I?, active games like the Balloon Stomp and Candy Relay, and low-key options like cookie decorating

The first Halloween party I ever hosted taught me a big lesson: costumes and snacks get people through the door, but games are what keep them there.

I’d spent days on decorations: cobwebs on the bookshelves, a playlist of eerie sound effects, and a punch bowl with floating gummy eyeballs. An hour in, though, my guests were huddled in small groups, making polite small talk with the people they’d arrived with. In a moment of mild panic, I grabbed a jar of lollies from the kitchen and asked everyone to guess how many were inside. Within minutes, strangers were arguing over their counting strategies, someone was shaking the jar like a maraca, and the room finally came alive. That night was still going well past midnight, and I’ve never hosted a Halloween party without a games plan since.

If you want your Halloween party to buzz from the first doorbell to the last goodbye, here are 15 games that work for grown-ups, whether you’re hosting a cosy night in with a few friends or a full-blown monster bash.

1. Blind Halloween Cocktail Taste Test

Make a few themed cocktails (think blood-red pomegranate spritzes or a martini garnished with a lychee “eyeball”), give each one a spooky name, and blindfold your guests. They score points for naming the drink, and bonus points for identifying the main spirit or mixer. For a non-alcoholic version, use mocktails or mystery punches.

2. Halloween Two Truths and a Lie

This is a classic with a seasonal twist: every statement has to be about a past Halloween. Did they really sew their entire costume by hand? Did they ever trick-or-treat at the same house twice in different outfits? The group votes on which story is the lie. Anyone who guesses wrong takes a sip (or a lolly).

3. Deadly Wink

At the start of the night, secretly pick one guest to be the “murderer.” They kill people by winking at them while everyone mingles, and anyone who gets winked at has to dramatically “die” on the spot. If you think you’ve spotted the killer, shout “Witness!” and name them, but if you’re wrong, you’re out too. It’s suspense and theatre in one, and it runs quietly in the background of the whole party.

4. Horror Movie Clue Hunt

Scatter props around the room that point to famous scary films: a hockey mask, a red balloon, a single bloody glove, a toy axe. Give guests a sheet to match each item to its movie. The first person with a perfect score wins. Even people who don’t watch horror films will recognise more than they expect.

5. Guess the Scary Movie Quote

Read out famous lines from Halloween and horror films and let guests race to name the movie. Keep a mix of easy and fiendish quotes so the film buffs and the casual viewers both get a chance to shine. Play it in teams to make it more competitive.

6. Who Am I? Halloween Edition

This is the ultimate icebreaker for a mixed crowd. As guests arrive, stick a name tag on each person’s back with a Halloween character on it, such as Dracula, the Sanderson sisters or Wednesday Addams. Everyone has to mingle and ask yes-or-no questions to work out who they are. It gets people talking to someone new straight away.

7. Halloween Jinx

Choose a handful of banned words for the night, such as “ghost,” “pumpkin,” “candy” or even “scary.” Every time someone slips up, the person who catches them gets a point (or the offender loses one). Tally up at the end and give a prize to whoever stayed most disciplined. It’s surprisingly hard to get through a Halloween party without saying “pumpkin.”

8. Spooky Heads Up

Everyone writes a Halloween word on a sticky note and adds it to a bowl. Players take turns drawing a note without looking, holding it to their forehead, and guessing the word from their teammates’ clues before the timer runs out. It’s fast, loud and very easy to set up.

9. Guess How Many Lollies

The game that saved my first party. Fill a big jar with Halloween sweets, give everyone three guesses throughout the night, and award the jar to whoever gets closest. It needs no explaining and gives shy guests an easy way to join in.

10. Guess the Pumpkin’s Weight

Bring home a hefty pumpkin and have guests guess its weight. The closest guess wins the pumpkin (or a better prize). Keep a kitchen or bathroom scale nearby for a big reveal at the end of the night.

11. Lights-Out Hide-and-Seek

Hide-and-seek gets a lot scarier as an adult when the lights are off. The seeker hunts in the dark, and anyone they find is taken to the “graveyard,” where they have to lie perfectly still like a corpse until the last hider is caught. Clear away any trip hazards first!

12. Spooky Telephone

This one works best with a big group. One person whispers a Halloween-themed phrase to their neighbour, who repeats it and adds a phrase of their own before passing it on. By the end of the circle, the message is long, garbled and usually hilarious. No supplies needed.

13. No-Hands Candy Relay

Split guests into teams, each with a row of bowls and a spoon per player. Holding the spoon in your mouth, you scoop sweets from one bowl and pass them into the next teammate’s bowl, with no hands allowed. The first team to get all its sweets into the final bowl wins. It’s ridiculous and very photogenic.

14. Balloon Stomp Battle

Tie a balloon to each player’s ankle and split the room into two teams. The goal: pop the other team’s balloons using only your feet while protecting your own. The last team with a balloon standing wins. Use orange and black balloons for full Halloween effect.

15. Halloween Cookie Decorating Contest

Set out plain biscuits, coloured icing, sprinkles and edible eyes, and let guests create their spookiest (or silliest) designs. Everyone votes for the winner, and then you all get to eat the entries. It’s a nice wind-down game for the end of the night, when energy starts to dip.

Ready, Set, Scare!

The secret to a great Halloween party isn’t the perfect costume or the fanciest spread. It’s giving people a reason to laugh together. Pick a few icebreakers for when guests arrive, a couple of high-energy games for the middle of the night, and something cosy like cookie decorating or ghost stories to finish. Mix and match these 15 games, and your celebration will keep going long after the last lolly is gone.
