And My Nighttime Skin Routine!
Last weekend, while we were out for groceries (again!), I casually slipped into a bookstore. My husband rolled his eyes, of course, because I said, “Just five minutes.”
I was there for a quick browse but somehow ended up planning my next home update… and buying a lipstick to match a book cover. Don’t ask me how. It just happened.
It’s strange how walking through aisles of books can inspire more than just reading. I get beauty tips, interior ideas, and sometimes a whole mood from those shelves. If Sephora is my holy shrine, bookstores are my spiritual retreat. That scent of old paper and new ideas? Therapy.

Here’s how I turn inspiration from bookstores into home styling and self-care magic.
1. Covers = Colour Palette Goals
The moment I saw the copper-foiled poetry cover, I thought, “This would make the perfect accent pillow.” Yes, I bought the book. And then a pillow in the exact same tone.
Book covers are not just covers. They’re mood boards waiting to happen.
A Jane Austen reprint gave me floral wallpaper ideas. A Penguin Classic helped me pick my nail shade. And once, I matched my lipstick to The Great Gatsby. Totally worth it.
If you’re in the process of buying a home, this kind of visual intuition becomes surprisingly useful. Book-inspired design ideas helped me assess how I’d actually feel inside a space, not just how many rooms it had. Because aesthetics matter too, right?

2. Lighting That Feels Like a Filter
There’s something magical about bookstore lighting. It’s warm, soft, and makes everyone look like they’ve mastered the 10-step skincare routine (even if all you did was splash water and hope for the best).
I recreated that vibe in my bedroom with fairy lights and a Himalayan salt lamp. Does it actually “trap allergens” and balance ions? According to this cheeky Guardian review, maybe not. But the amber glow is gorgeous and my sheet masks look fabulous under it. That’s reason enough for me.

3. Smells Like Fiction and Face Serum
One bookstore had a sandalwood diffuser that made me pause mid-sentence. I literally tracked it down and placed it next to my skincare shelf. If you’ve never smelled real sandalwood oil before—stop everything. It’s heavenly.
I found this deep-dive into sandalwood essential oil and let’s just say… I’m obsessed. It’s calming, creamy, earthy, and it makes even my 3-minute serum routine feel like a spa ritual.
Pair it with a rose lip mask, a hot tea, and a good book. Bliss.

4. Sticky Notes and Sheet Masks
In bookstores, handwritten staff picks feel personal. I started doing the same on my beauty shelf. A tiny note next to my charcoal mask says: “For recovering from long emails and longer in-laws.”
It works. Try it.
5. Shelfie Aesthetic, But Make It Useful
Inspired by Penguin Drop Caps (Jessica Hische, I see you!), I arranged my skincare by colour. Sheet masks in one tray, serums in another. Even my Glam Glow Powermud got promoted to the top shelf.
Books taught me how to stack, style, and save space. And also, that I have too many unopened mini perfumes.
So, what’s the point?
Books aren’t just for reading. They’re for feeling, styling, and sometimes even buying lipstick over. They bring beauty into my space the same way makeup brings confidence to my face.
So next time you’re stuck on how to style a corner or upgrade your mood, take a trip to your favourite bookstore. You’ll come back with more than just a story.
You might come back with a new scent, a lip mask, or even a decor plan.
What’s the last book that inspired your look, your lighting, or your skincare?

I have always found bookstores to be so cozy. I’ve designed spaces with them in mind on more than one occasion.
Wow! That’s awesome. ❤️
I love this SO MUCH! There’s nothing more inviting or cozy to me than a bookstore, so I can totally see designing a space around that. I have to try this.
Love being in bookstores! It just stimulates your brain and boosts creativity for me. Thanks 😊
Bookstores are so cozy, I just never thought to implement their styles to my own home. That’s so creative! I sometimes go to bookstores just to enjoy the environment.
Love going to the bookstores! Books are indeed cozy…
I LOVE THIS…It feels like a very warm and cozy interior, my favorite for sure…Adding the smell is an amazing touch, actually. I will do the same.
Same here! I love being surrounded by books…it somehow calms me. Thank you!!
I haven’t bought a new book in a while. But I love finding old leather bound books in charity shops. That really gets my creative brain flowing and I love the look of them on shelves.
Books definitely helps with creative block. I love them on shelves too.
I love seeing books used in decor. I especially love vintage books. I love that ragged old look.
Great idea for getting inspiration! Love where you drew ideas from. I love books and reading, so this totally resonates with me. How creative!
I have never really thought about looking at places you go for inspo for your home! It’s neat to hear your takes from your libraries.
