Ultimate guide for making 2018 a successful year

Successful

“Life makes more and better sense in 2018, Capricorn. A clearer perspective will make it much easier to achieve your goals and dreams.” –  Capricorn Yearly Horoscope

Hello, my love! How was your holiday break? I am back from a long and well-deserved holiday break. As T.S. Eliot said, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language. And next year’s words await another voice.” A new year is a new beginning for everyone. It’s an opportunity to change, achieve new heights and improve your life. Like many people, I also believe in stars, eclipses, conjunctions, and predictions – this is the time to read your yearly horoscope predictions. And even if you don’t believe in stars, it’s time for a fresh start to make 2018 a successful year.

But I’d like to tell you one thing that has the potential to transform your life quickly. Even though it is not written in any horoscope or predictions of 2018, it has the power to change your life forever.

It is important to focus on what you want to gain and forget what you might lose. Here are some extremely common excuses.

1- I can’t change my career now – I am 40 years old and it’s too late.
2- I am so unhappy in my marriage, but I can’t break this relationship as it will affect my kids.
3- I want to undergo a cosmetic procedure but I am scared of being called superficial.
4- I want to start my own business but I don’t know-how or skills to take a big step

Have you heard any of this before? I bet yes!

The problem is that we have started playing safe. We focus on what we have to lose than on what we might gain. Chances are fear is holding you back from taking steps towards your happiness but you are only focusing on prevention. You want to hold on to what you’ve already got and played safe. This may sound legitimate but in the end, it is only you who suffer.

“No more excuses.”

This week I watched The Shawshank Redemption for the 10th time. I have got an unhealthy relationship with this movie because it is a movie about integrity, persistence, hope, friendship, and skills. Andy Dufresne had specific goals in mind and he had the vision to achieve it with perseverance and passion. Without these goals, I am sure Andy would have given up in the jail. Watch this movie, if you want some serious inspiration.

Do you have specific goals? Do you have the vision to achieve your dream?

Let’s take a moment and focus on “excuses” that hold you back in taking decisions in life and achieving your dreams.

Fear #1: I can’t change my career now – I am 40 years old and it’s too late.

Reality: You need to connect with new opportunities in order to revise your career. Identify your top-skills, decide how you can leverage those skills, move towards the direction that excites you the most and network extensively to change your career. You don’t have to let go all your experience and start from the scratch. Be optimistic!

Fear #2- I am so unhappy in my marriage, but I can’t break this relationship.

Reality: Relationships require a lot of physical, mental and emotional investment. Your relationship has a direct impact on your decisions and life. If your marriage starts affecting your mental health and well-being, then it is time to let-go your relationship. And a good divorce is better than bad marriage for kids. If you are not happy then you cannot give happiness to your loved ones.

Fear #3: I want to undergo a cosmetic procedure but I am scared of being called superficial.

Reality: When people think of plastic surgery, they often imagine a woman with stretched, unnatural face with lip fillers or with two round breasts. The Internet is flooded with pictures of women whose plastic surgery has gone wrong. The decision to undergo plastic surgery or a cosmetic procedure is not taken lightly. But someone with a crooked teeth or nose is also not taken lightly. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure it is important to be clear why you want to have a procedure and what are your expectations for the procedure. It is important to fully understand the procedure, have realistic expectations and find a plastic surgeon who is certified and is highly recommended. Stop judging people who go for cosmetic surgery. Fear #4: I want to start my own business and quit my corporate job but I don’t know-how or skills to take a big step

Reality: If you have the drive to start a new business coupled with a passion to succeed it then you don’t need a miracle to make it work. Leverage on your passion and experience, learn new skills, study the market and follow the basic steps of starting a new venture. You don’t have to start a business in a niche outside of your comfort zone. In this era of technology, learning new skills is not difficult. Learn something new every day.

  1. Great article. It’s so true that for every excuse we make, there’s a reason we should do the opposite. Any reason we choose not to do what will make us happy really is just an excuse.

  2. This is really good love the no more excuses. It’s really surprising how many times we make excuses by thinking we can’t do anything all because we think that we kind of have to just accept what we have or are already, well we can be able to change it anytime.

  3. This is such a great post for those wanting to make improvements in their lives this year. I love the no excuses one! If it’s really important to you to cajbce, that’s a huge step to make.

  4. wow what a great post and DEF going to be a great year for so many of us- hope this helps serve as a great reminder to you and everyone that has a chance to read it!

  5. Thanks for sharing such an inspirational blog. This year, I decided not make any excuses and go for my dreams. This is why I am going to take accountability for everything I do. No excuses, only action, I can’t wait to see your journey in 2018

  6. No excuses is a great way to live! Unfortunately, I think most people still think excuses helps their cause, and they lean on them. It’s a hard habit to break – I know I’ve been guilty! A good article here to help iron out those excuses kinks!

  7. I love how you quoted TS Eliot I studied him on my Post Modernist literature course and his work especially ‘The Wasteland’ is deeply fascinating. On another note I agree that we need to stop making excuses if we want to get things done. I kept being scared to quit a job that was making me very unhappy and then a few months later I quit. It has been hard financially but I do like being my own boss. It is never late to make a change.

  8. I love that quote from Steve Jobs. It hits home! My personal excuse is “mortgage” or “bills” but I guess there will come a point when my happiness will become overwhelmingly more important.

  9. I love this post, great inspiration for those of us who are prone to making excuses because we are afraid to make a big change! I can definitely relate to the career one!

  10. It is always really easy to make excuses, but you are so right: it’s time to stop with the excuses! We can make our lives whatever we want them to be. Thanks for the great reminders and motivation to make it a great year.

  11. I haven’t thought about that quote from Shawshank Redemption in a long time, but it’s so fitting! I was thinking about what you said about changing jobs, etc. So many great businesses, like KFC, were started by people in retirement or who just wanted something different. It’s never too late to make a change. x

  12. All these quotes remind me of another great quote: ” The most effective way to do it is to do it”. I know how it is to feel intimidated by your own dreams 😀 and despite my fears, I have traced a plan to quit my job this very year, even though yes, I also feel like I’m too old for a change! Still, I think it can be done!

  13. Fear and being comfortable can hold anyone back. Daily steps breaking out of the same routine could be helpful as well.

  14. Hope the 2018 will be a beautiful year for everybody! Never loose motivations and follow my dreams is my mantra!

  15. Yes. I have heard all of those excuses before. I don’t agree with the excuse of being to old to change a career. I’ve known some that age 50 took a course and ended up making more money with the new career than they did with their other job. They have no complaints and do not regret it at all. One is about 45 and became a lawyer at that age!

  16. Shawshank Redemption is definitely one of my favorite movies. I actually did a review and listed it on my best films list. I think the expression of hope in the darkest of circumstances moves anyone. Its just so beautiful and cuts to the very soul of each individual. And I love the end. You get busy living, or get busy dying. And I plan to live.

  17. I LOVE the Ray Goforth quote! I love to write quotes like these down in my agenda to give me that little extra bit of inspiration I need on my down days.

  18. If we want to achieve something, we just not wait to land it on our feet – we work hard for it. No excuses, because excuses are just equivalent to laziness. We want success and happiness in life, then its our responsibility to hunt it for ourselves.

  19. This is a very nice post with some very essential to live a better and happier life. I think as we grow older we get used to living a life doing things that everybody does than doing what is right for us. Breaking the conventions and challenging oneself can bring in a great deal of positive change.

  20. Love this so much. It is never too late to change your career. At 39 my aunt switched from lawyer to nurse. She’s going all the day to being a nurse practioner. Always keep learning and growing.

  21. This is the best 2018 motivation post I have seen so far! Thank you for speaking about topics that are not normally spoke about. This article could help so many people. Such a great post!

  22. This is great advice. We make so many excuses about what we cannot do, yet we always have the power to change our life to something even better. This is great advice to start off the new year.
